Career Transition, a NZ Post story

2nd August 2007

Career transition services - yield greater value than the dollars spent.

In 2005, New Zealand Post changed its strategy to place a greater focus on customer needs, which required the company to reshape its marketing capabilities function

In planning major changes to its strategic direction, New Zealand Post recognised the need to protect its employer brand in terms of future recruitment, retention and productivity. They engaged Donington to provide best-practice career transition solutions for the people affected by the planned changes. (Donington is an Australian specialist Career transition and Outplacement provider, represented in Tasmania by Searson Buck).

Donington guided the 65 people in the sales and marketing team affected by the restructuring through change management workshops, offering them the support and skills needed to deal with the impact of the organisational change.

The change management workshops included helping people understand different career transition coping styles, stress management and goal setting.

The results were outstanding.

Surveys of those from the team involved in the workshops, found that almost half were completely satisfied or very satisfied.  Donington's Future Focus workshops ranked particularly highly, with almost 40 percent of the sales team completely satisfied or very satisfied and 60 percent very satisfied.

Donington also undertook job search workshops for those unsuccessful in securing a position in the new structure, and these too were well received with all participants either completely satisfied (67 percent) or very satisfied (33 percent).

Suze Wilson, the General Manager of Human Resources at New Zealand Post, said Donington's input in building the strategy to deal with the organisational change was invaluable.

By out-sourcing this component of the change management, employees could have confidence in the confidentiality of their position and feelings.  The workshops also meant that the change management process, which is always difficult for those involved, ran exceptionally smoothly.
