Dain Cairns- UTas Scholarship winner
5th April 2008
Dain Cairns was awarded the 2008 UTas/ Searson Buck Scholarship. A significant award, the Scholarship includes paid work undertaking a project at Searson Buck, a cash prize of $500, and the opportunity to complete an Internship at Searson Buck as part of university semester coursework. Based on an assessment of a written submission and results from the 2007 academic year, Dain impressed the judges with his academic ability and personal skills.
"Dain typifies the contemporary approach apparent in the HR industry across the country today," Stephen Porter, Joint CEO of Searson Buck, said. "HR is a respected profession which increasingly requires newcomers to hold tertiary qualifications. We regard the HR major in the Faculty of Business at UTas as amongst the best available and have found graduates to be very successful in pursuing their chosen career, both locally and nationally."
The Scholarship has evolved from the annual Searson Buck Excellence in Human Resources prize, initiated in 2004, and allows greater structure and content to be included, particularly the inclusion of specific project work with tangible outcomes.
Mr Porter said Searson Buck's desire to establish the annual Scholarship was based on the company's position, noting that "As Tasmania's largest locally-owned human resources firm, the prize is as much about supporting students and graduates as it is about indicating to the University that we support the curriculum and quality of academic research and teaching."
Dain has completed four weeks work on his project, assessment and design of a Tasmanian specific Salary Survey, and will continue work on this over the first semester 2008.
