“Let’s get your resume up to scratch…”

Tips for creating the perfect resume

The tips below will help you create a resume that will convince your ideal employer that you’re right for their company.

Provide the right personal details

  • Employers will be comparing your resume against others and making a decision based on your skills and experience in relation to a vacant role
  • Include your full name and contact details
  • It is not necessary to include your date of birth, marital or parental status, nationality or religion

Clearly communicate your career objective

  • Clearly convey your career ambitions to your prospective employer. This will show you are goal orientated and that performance is an important part of your career

Get the length, grammar, formatting and layout right

  • Keep it succinct. 3-4 pages long maximum, depending on your experience
  • Make it easy to read and digest. Employers should be able to scan your resume and pick out the important parts easily
  • Use an easy to read font in a standard size (11 or 12pt)
  • Carefully consider line and paragraph spacing
  • Use bullet points where possible
  • Bold where appropriate (headings etc.)
  • Check your grammar and spelling! Spell check, but also print and read your resume once finished

Make sure the content is relevant for the role

  • Write your cover letter to specifically suit the role, including reasons you’re keen to secure the role and skills and experience that relate to the requirements in the role position description. Read more about cover letters
  • Each time you apply for a different role, edit your resume so that it suits the requirements of the role
  • Emphasise and prioritise the skills and experiences from previous roles that relate to the role
  • Highlight any personal interests that relate to the role
  • Highlight your relevant professional and personal achievements. Think about similar work or projects you’ve received recognition for, successful results you’ve achieved and contributions you’ve made personally in the past

Ask someone else to read over it for you

  • A second opinion on your resume is priceless. Once you have it to a stage that you’re happy with it – ask someone to check it and help you make sure you’re “selling yourself” appropriately
